'MEAN GIRLS' (2024) | REVIEW

Not to be mean, and we won’t. But ‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) is totally slaying. Premiering on January 12th, ‘MEAN GIRLS’ is a resurrected IP 20 years hidden in hibernation. The film we now get in 2024 is a perfect remake, a musical remake.

Now some might say, “Not another musical!”, since we got ‘WONKA’  not too long ago, which were also one of those movies. However, ‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) does not want to hide itself being a musical. It actually has some excellent dance sequences and songs, which from some actresses, get angelicly delivered with a pitch-perfect voice. It’s a blast to hear in the theater and I love that this film is a musical at heart.

But that is not all, this film knows how to navigate the usually crowded land of high school love stories. The character roster we get to go on a journey with, is all amusing and complex. I would go as far as to say that the character's personalities and relationships are one of the highlights of this story. This and everything else make up for an enjoyable time in the theater.

Moving on, this is also a film that features a lot of hilarious scenes. Some particular moments indeed put a smile on my face. Nonetheless, thanks to the overly-great performances by for example Angourie Rice (Cady Heron) and Reneé Rapp (Regina George) the acting for this movie got a big thumbs up.

‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) also honors the original greatly. While I have not seen the original movie to its full extent, only mere snippets from it. I can still say that it does a phenomenal job of putting new life to an older IP. I also want to add that the overall story of the film, while not mind-boggling, still was interesting enough and stood strong on its own.

The love story that is prominent in the film makes you cheer for the characters. Which is something a strong love story should do. The film's ending was also solid, the same goes for the intro sequence. Both set up, as well as ended, the story in a well-executed manner. While this film got the ‘necessary’ happy ending it needs, the story’s path was not crystal clear from the start. That may be different for you if you have seen the original. But I thought the story was surprising enough to be made interesting for the whole duration of the film.

While ‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) is a movie with really good storytelling, at least if you ask me. There were still some weird story choices at times. Mainly the appearance of some fourth wall breaking, or when the characters look straight into the camera. In some of the musical numbers performed by for example Jaquel Spivey (Damian Hubbard), and Auli’i Cravalho (Janis ‘Imi’ike) characters, they sing and speak straight to the camera. Now, Jaquel Spicey and Auli’i Cravalho give of noteworthy performances as Cadie’s truest friends perhaps. As an integral part of the films story, I think it would have been pretty boring if they were not in the movie or would have been swapped out.

But now back to starring into the camera. While this is supposed to enhance the storytelling in some way, it felt a little bit weird nonetheless. However, since certain moments in the film were similar to a music video production, I guess it would have been weird if they ignored the camera altogether while performing.

The story of the film also has some really exciting twists, not to release any spoliers. But watch out were you are going. Some of the films scenes did not end up where I was expecting them to.

Overall I would also say that this movie is paced well. From my recollection of the film, I can say that nearly no scene felt too long or too short. While the musical numbers are frequent, I found them so enjoyable that I did not mind if it were one too many.

While ‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) can be a little bit awkward at times, or cringe as the youth would say. It does an extraordinary job with its story and diverse characters. The full roster of characters has some fun chemistry between each other, and you have a blast seeing everyone's story unfold on the big screen. ‘MEAN GIRLS’ (2024) is a film where the characters get to shine and where everyone gives a remarkable performance. If you especially like musicals, we assure you that this movie will be an enjoyable one.
