'THE BAD BATCH: S3' | REVIEW

The biggest ‘baddies’ from a galaxy far, far away are back, and their comeback is sure to leave skars to your heart.

After what has only been a sub-year brake, ‘THE BAD BATCH’ is once again back on Disney+. Three episodes are available to stream as of 21/02-24, and new ones are releasing every Wednesday at 8am GMT.

Now there are not too many animated Star Wars projects currently running. We have ‘TALES OF THE JEDI’ expected to return with a season 2, and ‘STAR WARS: VISIONS’ which premiered its second season in 2023. But for now, at least, ‘THE BAD BATCH’ is the only animated Star Wars project streaming with new episodes. In terms of episodes, we have seen the first half of the 16-episode season, and have some thoughts to share.

‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ starts of being somewhat depressing, and the tone feels dull. This, if you take into consideration, the end of season 2. Is suitable for the series story. We will not go into spoiler territory if you have not seen the end of season 2. But calling season 3:s start, somewhat depressing, is not bad at all. It makes sense for the story. However, compared to many other episodes of previous seasons, it does feel somewhat dull. At least in the beginning, after the first couple of episodes the tone gets easier and more lighthearted. But only slightly… Ther is still a troubled feeling leaning over the season.

There is a lot at stakes, there is no doubt about it, you can see an emotional toll taking effect on some characters. How certain circumstances affect characters, and how the relationships between every character evolves makes up for an interesting watch. It is probably one of the shows highlights even, the relationships and character development. These aspects are where the show shines the brightest.

Because the sky is filled with stars that shine bright, and if every shining star represented a way of doing action scenes, ‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ would most likely be compared to a dying star. It is not fully gone yet, but the series is ending soon and there are not too many ways of doing action left. Sure, the action in the show is not below average or anything, but it still is mainly blaster fire, and some running from a monster or building that is about to collapse.

But as I said, that is fine, because many other aspects of the show are so phenomenally great. One of them, was the characters and their development. Another was the dynamic relationships which were being formed. This together with for example, perfect pacing and colorful environments, in the end, makes up for the negatives we listed above.

But, when a star is about to die, it always results in an explosion, a ‘super-nova’. This could even be the case for ‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ when comparing it to a star. Perhaps in some of the season’s final episodes we get to see that ‘final’ action sequence, which is both cool, dynamic as well as impactful. Like how season 2 ended. Everything ending in a big ‘positively great’ explosion before the sun sadly fades away, and with it our beloved squad, at least for this time around.

But we are not quite there yet, the season consists of 16 episodes, and much can happen during the remaining episodes. We for example get to visit some familiar characters this time around, as seen in the trailer for the final season. This is always incredibly exciting, seeing how old characters come into play and connect the overarching story. Another great thing to add, is that some cool villains can be found in this season as well. Who they are you will get to discover for yourself. However, seeing clone force 99 fight some cool foes are always exciting.

Another aspect of the show which is particularly great is the environments or set design. (If you would call a digitally made environment that). I thought they visited some interesting places this time around, if you do not count the first couple of episodes, which felt somewhat too isolated. They were going with isolation, as a part of the story, but it just felt too much of the same in terms of looks of the environment. However, after those initial first episodes, the environments get much more exciting.

What is not to exciting sadly, is the animation of the series. Comparing this show to something like ‘ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ or even Marvels ‘WHAT IF…’ makes it not even a competition. While the animation is acceptable, it is not going to win any awards. This also means that other aspects of the show must do all the heavy lifting to make it into the exciting show that it is and deserves to be.

As things go, ‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ deserves to be recognized for its great side rather than its worse. We get to journey through the galaxy with a fun and complex crew, facing old and new enemies, as well as adding pieces to the larger puzzle that is Star Wars in recent years. Star Wars deserves to be a franchise that shines bright, and ‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ is absolutely helping this IP to achieve that.

Brightest indeed, at least if you are a Star Wars fan. Then this show is a must watch if you want to collect all pieces for the over-arching Star Wars story. The show does increase its connectivity to other Star Wars project in this final season. Not to say that the previous seasons have not done the same. But this season seems to connect the dots even further.

At the end of the season, we will hopefully get a clearer picture over what role, for example, ‘OMEGA’ (played by Michelle Ang), have in all of Star Wars. I also want to see what happens to the loyal soldiers of ‘Clone force 99’, will we ever see them in live action? Because that would surely make many die-hard Star Wars fans, like myself, go crazy.

‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’ is off to a great start, while the tone of the first episodes is a bit dull. The episodes that follow quickly manages to up the incline, putting us back in the ship with fan favorite characters. While many aspects of the show are fantastic, some weaker sides like the animation does lower our overall rating for ‘THE BAD BATCH: S3’. However, thanks to the series achievement in creating and maintaining dynamic relationships as well as an intriguing overarching story, the show will therefor receive the rating:

Rating: 4/5
